Some Truths About Our Legal System

Some Truths About Our Legal System

The legal profession has a dirty secret: It's overflowing with subpar lawyers who operate with little to no oversight, leaving clients vulnerable and lives in ruin.  Law schools churn out thousands of graduates each year, flooding the market with bright-eyed attorneys fueled by delusions of grandeur, and a lust for your hard-earned money.  These attorneys may lack the skills, ethics, or dedication to serve their clients properly.

Once licensed, these lawyers are often set loose on the public, free to operate as human wrecking balls who leave you standing in ruin after draining your bank account.  They can cost you visitation with your children, your freedom, professional licences, destroy your reputation--and they can do all of this with impunity.  And believe me: They do!

Bad lawyers aren't just an inconvenience--they destroy lives.  Missed deadlines, poorly drafted documents, non-existent preparation, drug use, untreated mental health--all of it--can translate into disaster for clients.

Unlike doctors or other professionals, lawyers face surprisingly lax regulation.  Bar associations, often touted as gatekeepers of ethics, are frequently overwhelmed or reluctant to discipline their own. And Bar associations view their oversight through a lense closely tied to budgeting--not what's in the best interest of the public.  Complaints against attorneys (when the Bars choose to engage) can take years to wheedle through the process, often ending in minimal punishments that free the bad attorney to continue plying their trade.  Meanwhile, clients are left to pick of the pieces  of botched cases and shattered trust!

The numbers paint a grim picture.  According to the American Bar Association, over 1.3 million lawyers are practicing in the United States, with law schools adding roughly 40,000 new attorneys annually.  Yet, studies suggest that a significant portion of these attorneys fail to meet basic competency standards. A 2020 survey by the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System found that 1 in 5 clients reported dissatisfaction with their lawyers performance.  Advancement of the American Legal System (2020 Annual Report) Clients reported poor communication, negligence, or outright abandonment as reasons for their overall dissatisfaction.
